Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! Please support me by making a donation here to AIDS Walk San Francisco.

Yesterday I went to see Angel's in America, parts one and two in a marathon session. It starts in 1985, the same year I started medical school. I was engrossed in the story, having stood beside so many as they feared AIDS, got sick themselves, fought for research on treatments and died. Many faculty recommended virtual space suits to see people with AIDS, despite the data already indicating that it could not be spread with out exchange of bodily fluids. I stuck with science, and though I used universal precautions, I touched people skin to skin, I opened my heart and I did my best to make a difference in people's lives even when I couldn't cure them. I n residency I trained at San Francisco General. Fully half of the people in the hospital at any time were HIV infected, though not all were there for that. HIV and AIDS shaped me as a doctor, forced me to question "the scientific method," taught me to talk about sexual behaviors in terms of body parts and fluid possible fluid exchange without judgement, changed how I had sex and my sense of what it meant to be a part of the Lesbian community.

HIV is still here. There's still no cure. There are treatments, however, and prevention strategies and early intervention strategies we could barely imagine let alone hope for in 1985.

And I'm still working to improve the situation. Please help me with a donation.
