Hi there!

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! Please support me by making a donation here to AIDS Walk San Francisco.

You know, when I was young, I had no role models for what it was to be trans, in part because so many women of the generation before me prematurely lost their lives during the early days of the AIDS pandemic. Unfortunately, HIV/AIDS still affects transgender and gender non-binary people at very high rates. Around the globe, nearly 1 in 5 trans women – and a growing number of trans men and others – are estimated to be HIV positive, which equals more than five million people.

When you look at the facts, it makes perfect sense because HIV/AIDS is disproportionately a disease of the underclass and the oppressed. In our patriarchal society, gender immigrants like me and others face widespread discrimination. Too many of us have been cast out by our birth families and communities, are not protected by basic legal rights, and have no access to competent healthcare or legal employment. All too often we’re forced to turn to the “underground economy” to survive. If you’re a person of color or with a low income, chances are you experience more unnecessary stress from society. Therefore, it’s no wonder that many of us are at high risk for an opportunistic infection like HIV.

Here in San Francisco in my role as Chief Development Officer at PRC, I have many responsibilities, and one of them is signing weekly checks to pay the rent for HIV positive clients who at risk of being evicted. Each and every day a disproportionate number of our clients are transgender individuals, because simply of who they are face discrimination in the workplace and housing market, let alone simply walking the streets.

If there is one city in the United States that should have an equal opportunity it is San Francisco. Sadly, it does not and that is why I walk. Thank you for your generosity and support in making a donation now to help lift up those in need and keep the San Francisco dream alive!
