Join me at AIDS Walk!

Hi friends,

As in previous years, the AIDS Legal Referral Panel (ALRP) will be a beneficiary of AIDS Walk San Francisco, happening on July 20. And I would love for you to contribute and/or join us in Golden Gate Park <3

I moved to San Francisco and started working for ALRP two years ago. I'm really grateful to be working with a solid team doing important, on-the-ground work. I've been in the nonprofit fundraising world as my day job for over a decade(!) now, and I've always been itchy about fundraising directly for organizations I work for--but this is a good one, I promise.

I just learned this month that while people living with HIV account for about 2% of the city's residents, they represent *over 11%* of eviction cases. And it's not making headlines yet, but evictions in San Francisco are at an all-time high right now. Our housing team has a 91% success rate of either keeping people in their homes or negotiating a settlement to make sure they receive enough time and money to find new housing. That's 167 households we kept from becoming homeless last year.

Meanwhile, [*gestures at the world*] we also opened more new immigration cases in January-April than in any comparable period in the program's 20-year history. So many of our clients (mostly queer, mostly brown, mostly poor, all living with HIV) have a really strong asylum case; they just need a lawyer to get them there, with compassion and without charging exorbitant fees. We recently received the exciting news that we were awarded a grant to hire a new two-year fellow this fall, expanding our team from 1.5 to 2.5 immigration attorneys. But the fellowship only covers about 50% of that position's salary and benefits -- so we're counting on our donors to help us make up the difference.

There's so much more our client services team does: mediating with medical and social service providers when folks are denied care; helping people prepare wills and other end of life documents so they can have a say in their treatment and legacy; etc. etc. etc. And all of our in-house legal services are completely free for our clients.

If you can spare a few bucks, I would really appreciate it <3
