Longer version:

I moved to San Francisco and started working for ALRP three whole years ago now, somehow. I still have to pinch myself when I realize I've really been able to make SF my home? The romance! The wonder!

Aside from the other marvels of being here, it's genuinely great to get to have a day job that is such a part of the City's fabric and history. ALRP started as a team of volunteers drafting emergency wills 43 years ago. Now, we're still drafting wills & other important documents as our community ages, and we're also keeping people housed (our eviction defense team directly kept 155 folks from being evicted last year as rents skyrocketed); advocating for clients as they encounter the endless bureaucracy that comes with accessing government benefits, insurance, and health care; and more. Over the past year, our immigration program expanded its scope to be able to support clients detained by ICE, and so far we've successfully gotten two people out of detention and back into their communities, along with dozens more who we're supporting with their ongoing asylum cases and so on. Wish that weren't necessary! But here we are.

I'm really grateful to the lawyers, paralegals, and social workers for doing the difficult, practical, on-the-ground work of advocating to make each of our 1,300+ clients' lives better, each year. (Lord knows none of those are jobs I would be well suited for, lol! I'm just at my computer, clickety-clacking away on admin/fundraising/comms stuff.)
